Choosing a physician to maintain your health care is important. There are physical, emotional, and financial factors to consider before you make your final decision.

The doctor-patient relationship can be a rewarding experience. Patients should be aware of several factors when choosing a doctor such as the doctor's educational and employment background. There are other common areas to review before a final decision is made for a doctor.

Good Location and Office Hours

The ideal office hours should include morning, afternoon, and evening appointments. Also, the ability to obtain a Saturday afternoon appointment for patients with long work hours.

A physician's specialty plays a role. For example, a neurologist is harder to find than an internist so a patient wants to consider if he/she may need to obtain an insurance referral to a medical specialist.

The location shoud be near work, school, and home when monthly patient visits are required.

Great Doctor and Good Staff

A patient should consider the physician's personality. For instance, a doctor who smiles and addresses questions clearly provides the patient with a sense of calm. Meanwhile, a doctor who rushes a patient with an unfriendly attitude may create a weak doctor-patient experience.

The office staff should answer ringing telephones, speak clearly when answering patient questions, and help with patient health insurance forms. The office staff may spend more time with a patient than the physician so their behavior can leave a negative impression.

A patient should be willing to follow a physician's care plan. For example, a patient with arthritis may need a combination of physical therapy, medications, and nutrition so a healthy attitude is critical to obtain a good treatment. Otherwise, the patient may become frustrated and seek help from multiple doctors.

Health Insurance and Doctor Fees

A patient should contact his/her health insurance provider to verify medical coverage and learn which physicians are listed in the health insurance plan. For instance, a physician may have been terminated his/her relationship with a health insurance plan.

The professional fees for a physician can make the difference between obtaining medical care and neglecting medical care. Medical fees should be understood including any fees for missed appointments. Some physicians charge high office fees for missed appointments.

Patients can check with a physician about a payment plan. For example, an office visit is $100.00 and the health insurance covers $50.00 so the patient may be able to pay the remaining $50.00 balance as part of an installment plan.

The decision to choose a doctor should include location, good staff, and reasonable medical fees to help patient and the patient's family. A doctor-patient relationship may continue for years so it is important to establish a strong, healthy bond.
