Body Contouring and Fat Removal- Costs, Aftercare, and Results

Aug 19, 2009 Amy Andersen

Less invasive forms of liposuction remove small amounts of localized fat from hips, thighs, ankles, stomach, thighs, or buttocks, while firming skin at the same time.

Lipo is not a weight loss procedure but a body contouring process, via fat removal and skin firming, that is gaining popularity as people attempt to conform to body ideals they cannot achieve by diet and exercise alone.

The Lipo Procedure

Specially devised equipment composed of ultrasound and an NdYag laser targets and breaks down fat cells, removing them by suctioning and draining, while simultaneously tightening the surrounding skin. The laser coagulates (closes) the blood vessels, minimizing bleeding. Bruising is lessened and the recovery time may be shorter than traditional liposuction.

Some body areas are accessible that might not be accessible by traditional liposuction. Since a general physician with extra training typically performs the procedure the cost is less than surgical liposuction performed by a plastic surgeon under general anesthesia. General physicians often have a room set up in their office or spa to perform the body contouring procedure. The increased interest in this procedure though, has encouraged skilled surgeons to offer it in their OR.

Aftercare, Post Procedure of Fat Removal by Non-surgical Lipo

Skin tightening garments (girdles for arms and abdomens, etc) are worn for 4-6 weeks. This helps the shrinking skin tighten. No vigorous exercise is allowed for about 1 month although normal activity is encouraged to prevent clotting or emboli.

Although the patient walks out the door himself after the procedure, a driver may be needed - particularly if pain medications or sedatives have been given.

How soon activities are resumed depends on the area treated. Removing chin fat greatly differs from belly fat or inner and outer thigh fat removal. An office follow up visit is scheduled to mark progress.

There are incisions (wounds) at the suction site that require healing time. There is pain, swelling, and some bruising which decrease with time. It can take several months for complete healing in some of the larger areas before knowing the final results.

Costs of Lipo Treatment, Liposelect (Vaser) or Smart Lipo

Regardless of the name of the lipo surgery, costs run from $1700 to $7000 depending on body areas, amount of fat, and geographic location of procedures. Discount inducements during slow times may reduce costs. Often the client is encouraged to do more than one area for further discounts.

Body Image and Cosmetic Surgery

The procedure plays upon insecurities of men and women promising increased desirability, self esteem, and better fitting clothes. Slim patients may be disappointed spending $2000 to remove a small amount of belly fat that may not be significantly changed. Heavier patients can become ill if an unskilled or overeager provider removes too much body fluid. The procedure will contour the area not change the body. It is not recommended for obese patients.

Viewing Lipo Before and After Photos

The photos online are alluring. There are several facts to keep in mind when viewing cosmetic procedure photos.

  • Lighting should be consistent in both photos. A direct flash tends to smooth wrinkles and folds. Light from below will hollow out an area.
  • The patient model should be wearing the same clothes or cover- up in the before and after photos.
  • The skin color should be the same. Bikini tan lines can be deceptive.
  • The viewpoint and distance should be exactly the same. The size of the body- standing or close up- should be an identical pose and distance.
  • Photos should be dated for accuracy.
  • Facial cosmetic photos should be makeup free.

Fat cells are removed. With weight gain, the distribution of fat will be to another body area. Often diet programs are offered at the same clinic as the fat removal procedure.
