Nutritional supplementation is a common term used frequently when it comes to health and wellness but what does it mean?
Nutritional Supplementation: Isolated or Whole Food? Nutritional supplementation is a common term used frequently when it comes to health and wellness but what does it really mean, and how do you know if you need it or not? Some people try to get the nutrients missing in their diets by taking traditional vitamin supplements, which are isolated mega doses of a select few nutrients. But individual vitamins or multi-vitamins don't supply the vast assortment of antioxidants and other phytonutrients our bodies need. What are antioxidants and phytonutrients? Well first they are ONLY found in fruits and vegetables, more importantly they are responsible for ridding our bodies of free radicals. Free radicals are created at the cellular level when our cells breakdown and regenerate, this occurs hundreds of thousand times each day. Free radicals cause disease and death in our body. When we have a high level of antioxidants and phytonutrients in our body our immune system is stronger which means it is more capable of destroying these cells. According the American Cancer Society, 1 in 3 people will experience cancer in their lifetime. What do they recommend to prevent this? Eat fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately the three highest consumed foods in America are french fries; hot dogs and coffee, all of which are void of the nutrients are bodies need to achieve optimal health. Did you know that one apple contains over 10,000 phytonutrients? That is why the old saying an apple a day keeps the doctor away used to be true. Unfortunately in today’s society it takes a lot more than one apple a day. Americans do not have a vitamin deficiency; we have a whole food deficiency. According to the American Cancer Society 90 % of Americans do not eat the minimum recommendation of 5 fruits and vegetables a day. The federal government has now increased this recommendation to 9 a day in order to prevent nutritional deficiencies and recommends 17-20 to prevent and treat diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and fibromyalgia to list a few. Like many people you are probably thinking, how can I possibly eat 17-20 fruits and vegetables a day? This is where whole food supplementation comes in. When you juice organic fruits and vegetables and remove the water and sugar, you have all the antioxidants and phytonutrients from the fruits and vegetables. Researchers have found a way to take these nutrients and put them in an oxygen free environment to encapsulate them. Once ingested in a capsule form, your body absorbs 100% of the nutrients into your blood and your levels of antioxidants increase significantly, resulting in a reduction of free radicals in your body by 75 %. The amazing thing is this occurs after only 7 days of being on a whole food supplementation. This means you have reduced your chances of disease and death and greatly increased the health of the cells in your body. So in short, whole food supplementation should be a part of everyone’s daily routine and while isolated supplements do have their place, you should consult an Integrative Medicine Doctor before beginning mega-doses of isolated supplements. My life has been greatly affected by Hepatitis C and Heart Disease. I personally have finally figured a way to get what is considered to be my daily requirements of fruits and vegetables. Thank God, I don't think I could have ever managed without wholefood supplements. Really none of us can. Lois Trader
